Mobility Scooter: Frequently Asked Questions
- What are the different types of mobility scooters? The three main types are: 1) Portable mobility scooters, 2) Mid range scooters, 3) Class 3/Road legal scooters.
- How Much do Mobility Scooters cost? The cost varies greatly between suppliers and also between types of scooters. Typically, portable mobility scooters cost around £500-1000, Mid range scooters cost from £1000 and Class 3 mobility scooters cost from £1500.
- Which is best a portable, mid range or class 3 mobility scooter? They all have different pros and cons: 1) Portable Mobility scooters are the lightest and most easily transportable scooter. They are also the most maneuverable and are ideal for indoor and outdoor usage. They can carry around 20 stone and have a travelling range of 10-15miles; 2) Mid range mobility scooters are larger and more comfortable than portable scooters. They are less easy to transport but can carry a heavier load (20-25 stone), have a greater travelling range (20-25miles) and offer greater user comfort; 3) Class 3 or road legal scooters are the largest and least transportable type of scooter. They do however offer the greatest level of user comfort and are fully road legal. In addition they have a faster travelling speed (upto 8mph), greater carrying capacity (25 stone+) and come complete with a full suspension.
- Will I need Insurance to use my mobility scooter? There is no legal requirement to have insurance for your mobility scooter. However, you would be wise to take out a third party cover.
- Do I need to pay road tax? There are currently no requirements to have road tax in order to use a mobility scooter.
- Are Mobility Scooters easy to drive? Yes they are extremely easy to drive. The handlebars are similar to those on a normal bicycle but the steering is far easier.
- What are the advantages to a three or four wheeled mobility scooters? Three wheel scooters are more compact, transportable and maneuverable. Four wheel scooters offer greater stability.
- Are Front Wheel or Rear Wheel Drive mobility scooters better? Generally rear wheel drive scooters are better as they provide more power and are generally more suited to hilly/rough terrain and carrying heavy loads. However, front wheel drive scooters are lighter and are a better option if you are looking for a transportable scooter.
- Are compact scooters worth considering? If you will be using your scooter to travel relatively short distances or plan to transport your scooter in your car then a portable scooter would be your best option.
- Is it worth taking out an extended warranty plan? Taking out an extended warranty package could save you a lot money in the long run, and will give you peace of mind.
- Should I buy a new or used mobility scooter? A reconditioned mobility scooter brought from an approved supplier should be almost as reliable as a new mobility scooter. But, if you can afford a new mobility scooter this would be the best option.
- How long will the batteries last? Normally around 2 or more years.
- How much will a replacement battery cost? Replacement batteries cost around £30.
- How can I keep my scooter working in good order? Try to prevent your scooter from getting to wet and dry it off it does get wet. Also, try to clean any mud and dust from your scooter regularly. It is also a good idea to charge your scooters battery regularly.
- What is the travelling range of a mobility scooter? This varies depending on the type of mobility scooter. Typically a transportable scooter has a range of 10-15 miles, mid range scooters have a range of 20-25 miles, and class 3 scooters have a range of up to 30 miles.
- What optional extras are available? Optional extras include: 1) Seat covers to protect the seats getting wet, 2) Scooter cape to protect the user from getting wet, 3) Scooter canopy for complete protection from the elements, 4) Storage cover to protect the scooter when not in use, 5) Mobility scooter insurance - not a legal requirement but recommended, 6) Extended Warranties (typically around 1-3years), 7) Shopping baskets - most mobility scooters now come with a shopping basket included.
