Stair Lift safety Features
Stairlift safety features should be considered the most important of all the stair lift features. Unfortunately people overlook safety features in favour of finding the cheapest deals but it is better to spend a little bit more to gain the peace of mind that you have brought a stairlift that meets the highest safety standards.
Should you buy a new stairlift then you can rest assured that it will come with a host of safety features as standard. However, if you are buying a used or second hand stairlift then you need to be more careful to ensure that it comes with the appropriate safety features. Stairlift Safety Features:
1) Safety sensors - your stair lift should have between 6 and 8 safety sensors that will automatically detect anything in its path. Should they detect anything they will bring the stairlift to an automatic stop protecting the user and anyone or anything in the stairlifts path.
2) Stairlift Limit sensors - limit sensors ensure that the stairlift stops in the correct finishing position.
3) Pressure-sensitive safety surfaces - pressure sensors prevent stair lifts from colliding with obstructions on the stairway.
4) Dual mechanical and electrical braking systems - prevents the stairlift descending uncontrolably should the motor fail.
5) Lockable on/off swith - prevent others (e.g. children) from using or activating the stairlift - this is an extremely important safety feature if you often have children visiting your house.
6) DC power - DC stairlifts are battery powered and therefore there is no risk of electric shock when the stair lift is in use.
7) Swivel seat - if you have a swivel seat then you will always exit the stairlift with the back of the seat facing down the stairs - this is an important safety feature since it means you will always be protected against the falling down the stairs by the back of the seat.
8) Smooth start stop motion - prevents the risk of injury tha can occur with jerky start stop motion of older stair lifts - very important for people with bad backs.
